On March 26, Trump announced that a 25% tariff would be imposed on imported cars and car parts in the following week. A tariff is a tax that the government places on goods imported from other countries. 

In remarks from the Oval Office, Trump said, “I think our automobile business will flourish like it’s never flourished before,” NPR reported. While some have praised the move, citing it could mean more shift availability for plant workers in the United Auto Workers union, foreign automakers were less than enthusiastic. 

According to NPR, the CEO of Autos Drive America, Jennifer Safavian, saw potential implications when it comes to vehicle cost and job opportunities for those in the United States.  

Safavian said, “The tariffs imposed today will make it more expensive to produce and sell cars in the United States, ultimately leading to higher prices, fewer options for consumers, and fewer manufacturing jobs in the U.S.” 

As the new tariff policy begins to take effect, automakers are attempting to give customers a window of opportunity to buy without fear, at least for a few months. 

According to WFMY 2 News, “Car makers are hoping to get consumers to buy now.” And how are they bringing people down to the car lot and behind the wheel? Putting a pause on price hikes. 

Autotrader Executive Editor Barry Moody told WFMY 2 News, “Hyundai, which builds cars in the U.S., has decided they are not going to raise prices. At the same time, it’s true of Toyota and Honda as well.” 

As Toyota and fellow car manufacturers attempt to keep prices steady, the window of opportunity is slowly creeping to a close as the auto industry awaits the tariff on car parts, which is set to go into effect on May 3.
